Sunset Socials

01

Sunset Socials

Fridays and Saturdays. A DJ by the pool, sundowners in hand, the Indian Ocean doing the lighting.

Every Friday and Saturday from late afternoon, a DJ sets up under the umbrellas and the Boat Bar opens for sundowners. Hotel guests are already on the list; neighbours and the rest of Diani drop by. It ends when it ends.

Fri and Sat · late afternoon onwards · no cover

Kitesurf Galu

02

Kitesurf Galu

One of the best flat-water spots on the coast, right off our beach. Lessons arranged with the school next door.

Galu's reef keeps the lagoon flat and the trade winds keep it honest: the Kaskazi blows December to March and the Kusi June to September. The school next door does lessons for beginners and gear hire for riders; we do the beach, which is quieter than Diani's.

Dhow at dusk

03

Dhow at dusk

A traditional sailing dhow, a cool box, and the reef going gold.

A local captain, a lateen sail and a couple of hours on the water as the light goes. Snorkel the reef first if the tide allows. Bring a hat; we bring the cool box.

Tide dependent · about 2 hours · small groups

Bikes and forest

04

Bikes and forest

Ride the Kaya Kinondo sacred forest trails, then back for a swim.

Fat-tyre bikes are at reception. The Kaya Kinondo sacred forest is a short ride south: a Mijikenda site with a community guide, ancient trees and a rule to leave everything as you found it. Or just ride the beach at low tide.

Bikes at reception · forest guide fee goes to the community

Do nothing

Beanbag. Book. Coconut. The activity most guests book twice.

A beanbag on the deck, a coconut opened at the bar, a book you keep meaning to finish and the tide going out in front of you. No booking required. Camel and horse rides pass along the beach most afternoons if you change your mind.

Galu Beach

The quiet end of Diani.

Galu is the southern stretch of Diani Beach: the same white sand and reef-sheltered lagoon, fewer hotels, fewer people, more space. At low tide the reef flats open up for walking; at high tide the lagoon is a swimming pool with a horizon. Camels and horses pass most afternoons if you fancy a ride.

Do it all, or none of it.

Tell us what you're into before you arrive and we'll have it lined up. Or don't, and see what the tide suggests.
